Queens Examiner - Local Union Repaves Sidewalk Near Catholic School

In honor of National Apprenticeship Week, Laborers’ Local 1010 helped replace the sidewalk outside of Holy Family Catholic Academy in Fresh Meadows last Tuesday.

The two-day project served as a refresher course in the skills of concrete preparation and replacement for over a half-dozen members. It included demolition and replacing the sidewalk, which was in disrepair.

Union contractors MECC and Ferrara Brothers provided the equipment and machinery for the project.

“We are glad to have brought together some of our more experienced journeymen, who along with great instructors, used their time and skills to teach our members about concrete placement,” said Armando Valeriano, director of Laborers’ Local 1010 Training Fund, “all while replacing the sidewalk for Holy Family Catholic Academy and doing our part to keep the local community safe.”

On behalf of the parishioners and families of the academy, Rev. Sean Suckiel, pastor of Holy Family Parish, thanked the local union for their contribution.

“The sidewalk repairs were long overdue,” he said, “and they came to the rescue.”

Local elected officials, including Councilman Eric Ulrich and Assemblywoman Nily Rozic, stopped by to support the union in their project.

“For years, Laborers’ Local 1010 has contributed to generations of skilled tradesmen and women who have built New York City with dedication and pride,” said Rozic. “I am grateful for their work in Fresh Meadows providing Holy Family Catholic Academy with a new and improved sidewalk for the school, parish and community at large.”
