Laborers’ Local 1010 LECET Meet and Greet with City Council Members
New York City Council Member and Chair of the Committee on Civil Service and Labor, Council Member Carmen De La Rosa visited the Laborers Local 1010 union hall and addressed 1010 apprentices and staff at a first-of-its-kind, Meet-and-Greet. New York City Council Members in attendance included Tiffany Cabán, Council Member Sandra Ung, Nantasha Williams, and Renee Taylor, representing the office of Council Member Selvena N. Brooks-Powers.
Local 1010 Training Fund requires Union apprentices to take both hands-on training and classroom learning. Union apprentices receive over 300 hours of classroom courses ranging from Asphalt Placing and Paving and Line and Grade before becoming full journey people in the field. Virtually all Local 1010 members work on public works projects. Prevailing wage laws ensure that all contractors bidding on public construction projects will pay family-supporting wages and that these projects will be built to the highest standards by skilled, safe, well-trained construction craftspeople. Union apprenticeships provide in class and on-the-job training while employed at wages which increase as their skills progress, and result in a long-term career in the construction trades. Apprentices receive all the tools they need to have a rewarding career as a skilled construction craft laborer with a living wage and benefits.
We look forward to continuing our partnerships with the NYC Council to ensure public work in NYC is completed safely, timely, and by workers who are earning a living that will support their families. Good #union jobs are the backbone of stable communities.
